Usually the young's are raised up only by the hens. The males are used only for mating. I try to combine one male for 2 females ( in exceptional cases for 3 females ) .
The Hens :
Normally I breed with 8 hens ( real mothers) and 4 hens ( surrogato/nutrices/adoptive mothers). I use these surrogato hens in case of the real females have more than 3 fertilized eggs. Because the hens raise up the chicks alone I do not let them more than 3 chicks per nest . I'm very happy with this method , I have strong chicks , and almost no fatalities during the breeding sesoen. The hens can easily take care of 3 chicks without any external help.
The cocks.
As I mentioned before I take 4 to 5 males for mating with the females and their role as father stops there. They stay in an apart room and transferred in the breeding cages only when the hen has already built her nest. In this way they are always accepted without problems by the hens.
As soon that the hen has laid the 5th egg the coks are transferred again in the 'males' room.
Breeding cages are 60cm x 36cm x 47cm for the hens which are going to attend the males and 46cm x 28cm x 42cm for the surrogato hens
